Textbooks and Ancillaries
Textbooks and AncillariesTextbooks and AncillariesTextbooks accompany a specific class or subject at primary, middle, high school, or university level and suggest a curriculum for that particular subject. Although textbooks have traditionally been in print form, much of the textbook market is making a shift towards digital books, like a lot of publishing these days. School Textbooks Vs. Higher Education Textbooks The textbook market differentiates between school textbooks meant for elementary schools or high schools and higher education textbooks meant for colleges or other post-secondary schools. In most cases, the choice of elementary school subject textbooks and high school subject textbooks are agreed upon and purchased in bulk by an entire school or school system for use and re-use in the classroom, where they remain after purchase. Higher education textbooks, meanwhile, are most often chosen or adopted for a particular course by the professor or instructor for the course. T he schools bookstore then makes the textbook available for individual purchase by the students taking the course. Reseller and Rental Challenges After a class is complete, some students choose to sell their books either to a reseller that specializes in used college textbooks or offering them up themselves online in an effort to recoup some of their expenses. As a result, the used textbook market is quite robust, which has impacted the higher education publishing marketplace. When a used book is sold, the original publisher sees no profit. In the past, these publishers have taken practical measures to counteract the effect of the used market, like making cursory updates to textbooks or simply changing the cover and then labeling the book as a different edition. Ultimately, this compels students to pick up the latest copy to ensure they are using the most updated edition for their studies. Adapting to the used market is just one of the challenges that have faced publishers. There is also a rental market to contend with sites that offer book rentals to students. This is obviously a mora cost-effective option for students but it likewise doesnt generate any new revenue for the original publisher. Digital Publishing Changes and Challenges For all the inherent challenges the online world has presented publishers on the retail side of things, the move toward digital publishing has created new tools that make reselling less of a threat. Like many software packages available, publishers can assign licenses for their digital products so that only a single user can use it. It also offers greater flexibility from a content perspective. While the print counterpart is static, digital publishing is dynamic. Updates can be made in real time without having to undertake an added expense of printing a new edition. As a result, the content is fresh and timely versus traditional print copies. Digital versions are also more appealing to tech-savvy students who grew up in t he internet age with smartphones and tablets. Teaching Tool Ancillaries Digital production can also complement print production and give publishers a way to add value to their existing products, such as producing ancillary materials- for example, teaching tools like teachers manuals, presentation slides to aid instructors, student workbooks and online study guides, and more. Depending on the nature of the ancillaries, they may be sold separately or made available with a textbook purchase. Ancillaries are hugely important to textbook sales. The school textbook committees or academic professors in charge of textbook adoptions for a particular course will give much consideration to the quality of the ancillary materials when making a determination of what textbook to use.

Its natural to be flattered by the attention of any employer making an offer, but it is essential to carefully evaluate offers based on their merits. 10 Tips to HelpYouEvaluate Your First Job Offer After College Here are 10 tips to help you assess offers for your first job after finishingcollege. 1. Decide Your Good Job Criteria Develop multifaceted, personal criteria for a good job so you have a filtertoapply whenevaluating offers. Common factors are how well the job content corresponds to your interests/ skills, the initial level of responsibility, prospects for advancement, training opportunities, salary, benefits, location, quality of potential supervision and organizational leadership, growth potential for that industry, corporate culture, and corporate ethics/social responsibility. Decide how important various factors are to you, whattype of employer would match your criteria, and whatjob would bestsuityouat this first stage of your career. Be aware of red flags thatmay indicate the job could be a nightmareinstead of a good first step in your career. 2. Be Clear About Your Role Make sure you understand what you will actually be doing in your first job. Go beyond the descriptions in corporate literature. Ask your prospective employer for the opportunity to speak with recent hires in similar jobs and ask questions likethese Walk me through how you spent your day yesterday?Which skills are fruchtwein critical to carrying out your job? What are the most stressful aspects of your job? What is the most responsible activity associated with your job? When did you first get to take on more responsibility? What percentage of your time was spent on the routine tasks that you mentioned? If youre still unsure about the job content or work environment, ask whether you could shadow one of last years hires for a day or two. 3. Consider Your Career Path Assess the pattern for advancement at your prospective employer. Find out common career paths evolving from your initial position. Ask to speak with staff who have progressed to next-level positions and determine what it took for them to make that progression. Ask recruiters and corporate managers for the typical percentage of new employees who are promoted and find out the normal time frame for advancement. 4. Check Out Training and Development Opportunities Investigate opportunities for training and professional development. Is training formal or on the job? Ask early career staff from the firm about the skills they have developed and theknowledge they have acquired 8. Location, Location, Location Take a sophisticated view on how you weigh the importance of your initial job location. If the job looks great and the location is less than ideal, consider whether you might be able to transfer easily within the company or industry to a more desirable location afte r a couple of years. Would you be able to easily travel on weekends to your first-choice location to socialize with friends, family, or a significant other? Inanycase, you will be very busy during the week with most new jobs. 9. Think About the Future Assess the prospects for your target employer. Is the organization growing, stable, or shrinking? Is the industry growing or fading in significance? Advancement prospects will usually be better at a growing company, and it will generally be easier to find another job if the industry is expanding. Ask alumni in the industry about trends and aboutwhether they would target that industry if they were starting their career again. Consult library resources about trends at the organization and within the industry. When youre deciding on which job to accept, keep in mind that most likelyyou wont stay at your first job for more than threetofive years. 10. How About Management Style? Carefully evaluate the leadership style and personality of your prospective first supervisor (if youknowwhoitis). Ask people who report to him/her open-ended questions likethese How would you describe his/her approach to management or leadership style? What do you enjoy most about working for him/her?What mechanisms exist for providing feedback? 6 reasons why your boss doesnt trust you
6 reasons why your boss doesnt trust you6 reasons why your boss doesnt trust youStudies reveal that one of the main reasons employees are dissatisfied at work is because of their relationship with theirmanager. While it is amanagers responsibilityto establish a positive and productive work environment built on trust, employees play a large part in building or breaking that. Rather than place the blame on the boss, well explore how employees can impact working relationships.Great working relationships are built on trust. In training and coaching employees, I help them become aware of the behaviors that build or break trust amongmanagementand teams. Now, if it seems like your boss doesnt confide in you, it may be because of any of these six reasons. You dont follow through on your responsibilitiesSomewhere down the line, you may have dropped the ball. Maybe you were given a deadline and didnt follow through on your commitments. Perhaps you over promised and underdelivered. If you dont k now how to do the job, seek or ask for help the alternative will reveal itself later in poor performance or sub par work. Whatever the circumstances, your lack of follow through on your responsibilities will break down your bosss trust in you to handle future assignments. If you noticed that youre being passed up on opportunities or not given as manyresponsibilitiesas your colleagues, it may just be because your boss no longer trusts in you to get the job done. You refuse to accept responsibility for your mistakesRather than make excuses or blame your circumstances on others, accept responsibility and accountability for your mishaps. Not taking responsibility for your actions will quickly make your teammates and boss lose trust in you. Admitting where you went wrong will help you earn trust and respect from your colleagues. Youll platzset a good standard for your team to own up to their mistakes as well. Theyll relate to you for simply being human. You dont get along with your teamIf you tear down your teammates rather than build them up, your boss will lose confidence in you. A manager prefers to have team members who lead and lift one another up. If you throw yourcolleaguesunder a bus and criticize their behaviors, then it will be difficult for your boss to see you as a leader. Even if youre a top performer, this still stands. You may think youre doing your boss a favor by complaining about how your teammates arent pulling their weight, but that is far from the truth. Your boss is challenged with building and managing a team to perform and get along well. Rather than tear your teammates down, step up as a leader to help build your teammates up. Youll earn major respect from your boss. You complain instead of finding solutionsRather than focus on all challenges in your job, seek solutions. If youre constantlycomplaining, frustrated and pointing out problems, then your boss will lose trust in your ability to help the company make progredienz. All great companies go through their share of challenges and growing pains. Focus on the progress and help implement solutions. This will earn you the trust of your team and employer. You want your boss and teammates to see you as the victor who focuses on the gains, rather than the victim who focuses on the pain. You lieIf you exaggerate or twist the truth, you will lose trust. Many employees think that by hiding the truth, theyre protecting themselves and others from potential negative consequences. If you make a mistake, own up to it and turn it into a learning opportunity. If you said something that offended somebody in your office, apologize. You will earn respect for being sincere, honest andhuman. When an employer has to puzzle together the pieces and investigate all sides of a scenario, its easy for them to lose the trust of employees who blatantly lie, exaggerate or hide the truth. Separate your feelings from the facts of the matter. You cause office dramaGossip, negativity and drama are distrac ting to the geschftliches miteinander. If youre participating in officedrama, whether its escalated to your manager or not, it creates a ripple effect and impacts office culture. The last thing a busy boss wants to deal with is drama. When drama brews, the best thing to do is to mind your own business or try to nip it in the bud.An employee who has good character and consistently demonstrates competence will build trust. This happens over time. Although its tough to mend trust thats broken, take these as lessons learned and try to tip back the scale to earn back your bosss trust. This post was originally published on Fairygodboss.

5 Ways to Draw More Applicants to Your Job Fair Booth
5 Ways to Draw More Applicants to Your Job Fair Booth 5 Ways to Draw More Applicants to Your Job Fair Booth With lots of jobs and talent to be had, both job seekers and employers know there will be a sense of competitiveness in the air. Job seekers want to make sure they stand out from other candidates and make a great impression on recruiters. Employers also create job fair strategies in order to attract the most qualified candidates but a recent survey suggests that some employers are unknowingly pushing applicants away. In a February 2015 survey of job fair attendees, conducted by TheQuarterRoll.com, employers noted that some job seekers would walk by their booths at the event and not stop to ask about opportunities. Employers said that job seekers were missing hidden opportunities because they assumed they already knew all of the positions offered. For example, a recruiter at a mortgage processing company was advertising administrative positions, but she also had open positions for a human resource generalist, a software engineer, and a payroll assistant. Job seekers wouldnt know tha t unless they stopped and talked to the recruiter. So, why dont job seekers stop at every employers table and ask about job opportunities? That was one of the questions the survey sought to answer. While employers stated they thought most job seekers generally approached companies based on brand recognition or other marketing initiatives, job seekers stated other reasons. Based on their responses, the following tips are for employers who want to maximize the amount of traffic to their booths at job fairs this season. 1. Eliminate Distractions and Focus on Candidates Job seekers said that they were hesitant to approach recruiters who were eating, talking or texting on a phone, frowning/disinterested, writing, doing paperwork, typing on a laptop, or engaged in a very long conversation with someone else. The reason given for the job seekers hesitation was they felt they would be interrupting the recruiter, which would get the dialogue off to an awkward or difficult start.2. Smile Company representatives that seemed unhappy to be at the job fair or appeared to not want to be bothered were a turn off to job seekers. On the other hand, recruiters that smiled and made eye contact were appealing to job seekers who may not have otherwise initiated conversations. A smile was taken as an invitation to approach the employers booth.3. Have a Colorful, Attractive Display Next to the recruiters welcoming behaviors, job seekers said the second most important thing that made them approach a companys booth was its appearance. Nearly bare tables with only a few brochures on display were often passed over, while booths that had easy to read information on benefits, jobs, and available locations were favored. One observation brought up by job seekers was that the booths with easily read information gave applicants talking points that made it easier to approach recruiters and initiate conversations. 4. Stand Up Job seekers stated that it was easier to approach someone who was standing than it was to approach someone who was sitting. The explanation most often given was that, when the recruiter was at eye level, it was easier to hear them above the noise of the job fair. Additionally, when the person applying for a job is standing over the seated recruiter and talking over the background noise, they may feel like they are talking down to the recruiter, creating an awkward interaction. 5. Bring a Partner Big job fairs attract big crowds that can quickly become unmanageable if only one person is manning the companys booth. Many job fair attendees want a few minutes of the recruiters time to ask questions about available jobs, explain items on their resume, or learn more about the company. Of course, recruiters also like to have the opportunity to speak to applicants. Many job seekers stated that they would feel intrusive waiting beside another candidate who was talking about their resume and would likely move on to another table. By having a partner at the event, recruiters can better manage visitors to the booth. These five actions will allow recruiters and hiring staff to create a dynamic, welcoming presence at this seasons job fairs and draw in talent that may have otherwise walked by.

U.S. Army Weight Standards For Men
U.S. Army Weight Standards For Men U.S. Army Weight Standards For Men The Army is overhauling the fitness mission and developing new standards for tactical fitness and health and wellness. The standard PFT of pushups, situps, and a 2 mile run will soon be replaced with a more rigorous test that actually challenges the soldiers in all the elements of fitness besides upper body strength and cardiovascular endurance. Now the test also tests leg strength and power, upper body power and muscle stamina, grip, core strength, and speed and agility. The new exercises that replace and add to the test are: Trap Bar Dead Lift, Shuttle Run (with carry, drag, sprint events), hanging knee ups, hand release pushups, and full body power creation using medicine balls. This new physical fitness test is being tested now and will be Army wide in 2020. The height / weight standards can be found using the Army calculator on the Go Army official website. Reference AR 600-9 Weight Charts and Body Fat Measurements Having a job in the United States Armed Forces requires the applicants, recruits, and active duty / reservists to meet certain standards of fitness and health. Part of the health screening is to measure your height and weight and if that does not meet the standards within the Army, you will have a secondary measurement of the Tape Test - using a tape measure on the waist and neck. U.S. Army soldiers are subject to physical demands. As a result, the Army has promulgated weight and body fat standards to make sure individual soldiers are in shape to meet the challenges of Army service. The body fat standards replaced the Armys weight requirement in 2013. They are designed to account for soldiers who are heavier than allowed by Army weight tables, but who have low levels of body fat. The standards apply only to soldiers who already are part of the U.S. Army. New recruits have different standards. Army Weight Standards and Screening Process U.S. Army soldiers are screened at a minimum of every six months to make sure they meet the body fat standards. Soldiers are weighed, and commanders use a weight-for-height table to determine if a soldier meets the standard. For men, the weight-for-height requirements convert to a body mass index (BMI) rating of at least 19. Body mass index, or BMI, is calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in centimeters squared). A BMI of less than 18.5 is considered underweight and over 24.9 is considered overweight, according to the National Institutes of Health. Male soldiers between ages 17 and 20 must have a BMI of 25.7 or less; men 21 to 27 years old must have a BMI of 26.4 or less; men ages 28 to 39 must have a BMI of 27.1 or less; and male soldiers ages 40 and older must have a BMI of 27.5 or less. One of the least precise methods to measure someones body fat / lean muscle mass is through the use of the BMI protocol. However, for those with greater muscle mass than fat that skew the results of this test, there is another option to be measured using the Army approved method of body fat measurement - The Circumference Test. If a soldier fails the first part of the screening (the weigh-in and check on the weight-for-height table), then commanders may direct a body fat assessment. If the soldier also fails that assessment, then he will be enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program. Commanders also have the authority to direct a body fat assessment on any Soldier that they determine does not present a Soldierly appearance, regardless of whether or not the Soldier exceeds the screening table weight for his or her measured height, according to the regulations. Exceptions to Army Weight Standards There are several exemptions to this regulation that can apply to men, according to AR 600-9: Soldiers with major limb loss. Major limb loss is defined as an amputation above the ankle or above the wrist, which includes full hand and/or full foot loss. It does not include partial hand, foot, fingers, or toes.Soldiers on established continued on active duty and/or continued on active Reserve statusSoldiers who have undergone prolonged hospitalization for 30 continuous days or greater.New recruits. These recruits, regardless of component, will have 180 days from entry to active service to meet the retention body fat standards established in this regulation. Army Body Fat Assessment Army Regulation 600-9 states that Males are allowed the following Body Fat Standards. However, all personnel are encouraged to achieve the more stringent DOD goals which is 18 % body fat for males and 26 % body fat for females. The maximum allowable body fat in men is: Age Group 17-20: 20% Body FatAge Group 21-27: 22% Body FatAge Group 28-39: 24% Body FatAge Group 40: 26% Body Fat Failing height / weight and body fat standards have a cost. Army personnel who are overweight, or worse obese, including Soldiers who become pregnant while on the weight control program are not promotable to the next higher rank, will not be assigned to command leadership positions, and are not allowed to attend professional military training schools. Not meeting the standard can cost you career enhancing opportunities that may only be offered on occasion. The Circumference Test The body fat percentage is determined by measuring the soldiers neck circumference and abdominal circumference three times each, and then subtracting the average neck circumference from the average abdominal circumference. These figures, combined with the soldiers height in inches, allows the soldier performing the calculation to obtain the total body fat. Unfortunately, the circumference test to determine body fat percentage is not the most accurate measure of methods. However, the percentages to fail the body fat percentage test in the Army is fair. Of course, people who are borderline failing will disagree, but body fat in the 20 percentage area is high for such a dangerous profession as a military member where your life or your buddys life may depend on your physical ability to carry yourself or others our of harms way. Majority of women see exclusion at work as a form of bullying
Majority of women see exclusion at work as a form of bullying Majority of women see exclusion at work as a form of bullying Being left out at work is not only a lonely feeling, but it can also feel like an act of bullying, a new survey finds. According to a new poll from accounting firm Ernst Young of more than 1,000 working professionals in America, being excluded at work left the majority of women - 61% - feeling like they were being bullied. How exclusion at work can feel like bullyingWhile the majority of women saw being left out at work as a form of bullying, the majority of men - 53%- said it was not. Across generations and genders, 40% of respondents equated social exclusion with bullying.Whether or not you see social exclusion as bullying depends on your definition. Bullying can mean physical aggression, but there are other insidious ways you can be made to feel small. The National Centre for Bullying defines the term as âwhen an individual or a group of people with more power, repeatedly and intentionally cause hurt or harm to another person or group of people who feel helpless to respond.â When you watch a group of colleagues in the position to promote your career have meetings and take calls without you, this can make you feel helplessly frustrated. Getting the cold shoulder for hangouts and meetings makes you feel like you do not belong. Forty percent of men and women said being excluded made them feel physically alone. The survey did not explore whether participants saw the exclusions as intentional or not, but if you notice you are being repeatedly left out of projects, intention feels less important than impact. You need one-on-one time with colleagues to build rapport and gain the social capital you need to get your ideas executed. When important work events exclude groups in the office, this unfairly hurts career advancement. This is what Ellen Pao alleged that her former employer Kleiner and Perkins, a venture capital firm, did to female employees like her in a 2015 gender discrimination lawsuit. She said she and other women were barred from certain work tri ps and a meeting with important guest Al Gore âbecause women kill the buzz.âTo get ahead in your career, you must first get a seat at the table where decisions get made. And to do that, everyone needs to feel like they have the invitation to get inside the room.

Why your well-meaning help to coworkers backfires
Why your well-meaning help to coworkers backfires Why your well-meaning help to coworkers backfires You may want to think twice before you go up to your colleague and offer unsolicited advice on how they can do their work better. A new study in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that even well-meaning good advice can backfire for both helper and recipient when it is not asked for.Why you should not help coworkers unless askedManagement professor Russell Johnson defined the two kinds of help employees are more likely to give at work: active helping - âproviding help when requestedâ- and proactive helping - âproviding help without being asked.âUsing daily observation logs and surveys of employees working manufacturing, government, health care and education, Johnson found that we do not react well to proactive helpers. While active helpers got gratitude for their act of generosity, participants were less inclined to give thanks for help they did not ask for from their coworkers. When you go up to your coworker and offer advice without needing to be asked, you may see yourself as a generous coworker going above and beyond. But your coworker could be seeing a colleague acting morally superior. âThey think I cannot handle this on my own?â the offended colleague thinks. On the other side, it can feel like a slight to have your help go unthanked. âI went out of my way to help for this ungrateful person?!â the unsolicited helper thinks. In these cases, it can be best to keep your mouth shut.âBeing proactive can have toxic effects, especially on the helper. They walk away receiving less gratitude from the person that theyâre helping, causing them to feel less motivated at work the next day. More often than not, help recipients wonât express gratitude immediately, which makes it meaningless as it relates to the helperâs actual act,â Johnson said in a statement. âAs for the person receiving the unrequested help, they begin to question their own competency and feel a threat to their workplace autonomy.âIf your coworker asks your opin ion on how they can handle a problem, go ahead and speak freely. But unless you are specifically asked for advice, the most collegial act you can do is to mind your own business.

You should always surround yourself with people smarter than you
You should always surround yourself with people smarter than you You should always surround yourself with people smarter than you I meet a lot of entrepreneurs today who are afflicted with an unfortunate misconception: that their primary job as the leader of their company is to tell other people what to do.This mentality bears a variety of repercussions, but it particularly affects hiring processes. Entrepreneurs infected with this misconception believe that they donât need people who are brighter or smarter than them, but rather, people who are malleable and accepting of direction. If they come a bit cheaper? Well, thatâs a win-win.The problem is, that couldnât be further from the truth. The job of a team or company leader is not to tell people what to do. Rather, your job is to create conditions conducive to growth and success â" to supply great people with the resources they need to achieve great things. In fact, hiring people on account of their perceived docility will only increase your companyâs chance of failure. As a founder, manager, or CEO whoâs building out a team, your job is similar to tha t of an army general: to find and cultivate talented lieutenants and give them the tools they need to succeed. You need to find the smartest people â" the strongest people â" and motivate them with a strategy and mission thatâs intrinsically captivating. If those people happen to be smarter or stronger than you, thatâs a very good thing.Simply put, hiring smart people leads to better results. Hereâs why.Your business will grow faster if you have smart, skilled people in every sphereHereâs the bottom line: progress â" by way of promptly completed projects or procedural innovation â" comes faster when skilled, smart people are driving the core processes that are important to your business. It took my team and I at Skylum a long time to learn this. Like many first-time founders, we actually had the opposite impression: that weâd make progress faster by hiring people who perhaps had less expertise, but came cheaper and were positioned to join the company quickly.Soon, of co urse, we discovered the truth: it pays to invest in people who are dynamically capable â" people who are in fact smarter than you, and whom you can learn from. Why, exactly? Well, for one thing, intelligent employees will allow you to solve problems you otherwise wouldnât be able to on your ownGreat hires can improve aspects of your business that you â" with your limited expertise and perspective â" might not have even seen as needing improvement. For example, my team recently hired a person whoâs an expert when it comes to email marketing, automation, and after-purchase customer experiences. His first day on the job, he sat down in front of his laptop, cracked his fingers, and combed through the processes weâd built to drive these functions. Iâd been under the impression that they were pretty strong. But within an hour, our new hire had redesigned them so they were flawless. Most impressively, he built a system to ensure that the data we collect through these channels â" f rom email, to advertising, to customer feedback â" was made available to our team in one easy-to-find place. This allowed us more insight into customer behavior. We had no idea that much streamlining was even possible. When you hire people like this, your company will improve in ways you can hardly anticipate. And when problems arise that might have otherwise necessitated the hiring of a consultant or outside expert, youâll find you already have that expertise in-house.Another benefit of hiring genuine professionals? They can operate independentlyWhen youâre building out a team, what you should be looking for are people who can eventually own their projects or processes. If theyâre capable, such people will not only complete those projects â" theyâll be able to innovate and improve the processes they used to complete them, creating more effective workflows.Such people are crucial to your companyâs success. Their ability to own critical functions frees you to focus on other matters, and their ability to innovate will make your company more creative.Plus, in time, theyâll grow to become leaders in their own right â" managing their own teams to create value at scale. That increases your productivity exponentially. So how do you hire these kinds of people? The catch to hiring people like this is theyâre often already known experts in their fields, which means theyâll likely be expensive to bring on board. The good news, though, is that experts arenât always looking for the most lucrative contract. What they really want is to play a role in solving interesting problems. They want to join a mission that is intrinsically satisfying. For this reason, when interviewing candidates for a given role, you should make sure to articulate your companyâs vision and mission clearly and succinctly. Then, you should also ask candidates two simple questions, which will help you identify whether theyâre properly motivated:How much money do you want to make in 2 yea rs? Where do you think you can bring the company within the next year?Their answers will show you whether or not theyâre inspired to join your team for the right reasons. And if youâre interviewing the right people, youâll generally be inspired by what you hear. Dynamically capable employees are usually seeking big challenges, along with assurances that theyâll play an important role in the companyâs attempts to solve those challenges moving forward.Even with all this knowledge, you wonât build the best team if you hold onto the belief that you need to be the most capable person in your companyItâs true that when youâre building out your team, quality is more important than quantity. Thatâs important to remember. But itâs more important to remember that you as the CEO donât need to be the most qualified person on your team â" the ultimate expert. In fact, you shouldnât be.Whatever war your company is waging, you want the best people beside you on the battle field.Thatâs what will give you the best chance to win. This post was originally published on Quora.com.

Remove the Guilt and Celebrate Being a Working Parent
Remove the Guilt and Celebrate Being a Working Parent Remove the Guilt and Celebrate Being a Working Parent Being a working parent can be physically challenging and emotionally complex. It takes an extensive amount of planning and preparation to keep your work and home life both running smoothly. It also takes a lot of emotional wherewithal to be present in both realities. Without ample support this volleying between worlds can lead to feelings of emotional exhaustion and guilt. You have important reasons for choosing to be a working parent, and you are certainly not alone. There are so many of us who have made the same decision. Your kids are counting on you to make good choices for them, and you are doing just that. Your decision to work will yield a lot of great benefits for your kids. As they mature, your kids will be proud of your professional achievements and accomplishments. You are modeling professionalism for your kids. And this will serve them well. Undoubtedly, youâve done the legwork to make sure that your kids are getting excellent care. You should be getting the emotional support you need too. You deserve it just as much as they do. Find your Village Talk to other parents, or ask your colleagues in human resources and see if your workplace has any professional groups for working parents. If such a group exists, join. If not, see if you can start one. At my former workplace we had a great momsâ group that started in our lactation room. The space we were given was a cold and spartan room that looked like an abandoned classroom. We papered the walls with inspiring quotes about parenthood and pictures of our kids. We took turns bringing in snacks so the room felt more inviting. It became a very supportive place. We grew our momsâ group into a parentsâ group so that dads could also participate. We started regular lunches where we discussed the challenges faced by professional parents at our company. Our group was a wealth of support and information. Research Flexible Options Flexibility rivals salary as a key component of compensation for many employees. Telecommuting and flexible work hours can make a big difference for working parents. When my daughter was born I was able to negotiate two days a week that I could work from home. A year later when my son came along I was able to do a four-day telecommute schedule. This was a new offering for the company I was working for, but it was willing to give it a try because there is such a demand for flexibility, and writing jobs work well as telecommuting jobs. It was a huge help to my family and me. If your company is not open to such an arrangement but you would like to examine telecommuting options, you can use Simply Hired to search telecommuting jobs by doing an advanced search and selecting the job type âtelecommute.â While working as a telecommuter has its own challenges, itâs also a great way to balance the demands of work and family life. Remember You work hard for your family. Today that looks different than it did in the past, but the love and commitment is completely the same. Donât let self-doubt or guilt erode your confidence. You are making great decisions for your family.

Temporary Early Retirement Authority (TERA)
Temporary Early Retirement Authority (TERA) Temporary Early Retirement Authority (TERA) I got an email back in April from someone wanting to know if a veteran was yanking his chain about being retired with only 16 years of Active Duty service. As it turns out, there was no chain yanking. It is possible to retire with less than 20 years of service, and not have it be a medical retirement. In 1993, a program was put into effect â" the Temporary Early Retirement Authority, known simply as TERA. Under the program, authorized members with over 15, but less than 20 years of total active duty service were allowed to apply for early retirement. It allowed the military to help in the drawdown following the end of the Cold War. The opportunity to retire under this TERA program ended in September 2002. In the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, TERA was again reinstated, still allowing authorized members with over 15, but less than 20 years of total active duty service to apply for early retirement. The opportunity to retire under this TERA program still ongoing, and is expected to end by December 31, 2018. For the Coast Guard, TERA is established in the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act of 2012. TERA is a discretionary authority and not an entitlement. TERA, in general, applies to both officers and enlisted. While each branch has their own instructions governing who may use the program (and they review the program annually), in general, early retirement under TERA is limited to Active Duty Personnel who are denied continued active duty service to 20 years. âTraditionalâ Reserve Component service members arent eligible for TERA, though reservists with sufficient Active Duty service may be eligible. The Military elects to use TERA as part of a comprehensive force management strategy to shape the force. For example: In 2014, the Air Force announced it was not planning to offer TERA in 2015, having hit the goals needed to size and shape the Air Force. The Coast Guard elected not to implement TERA for enlisted personnel in 2013-2014, though it was implemented for officers â" though only for officers that completed at least 17 years of Active Duty service. Members who retire under TERA incurs no Reserve obligation (note: Navy personnel will still belong to the Fleet Reserve, and Marine Corps personnel to the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve until they are eligible to transfer to the Retired List at their scheduled 30-year mark). Members retired under the TERA program receive the same retirement benefits as those that retire under the 20-year program â" complete with TRICARE and TRICARE for Life, starting immediately upon retirement, the same COLA adjustments, base access, ID Card, etc. - the only difference is their retirement pay is reduced. TERA retired pay is initially computed using the length of service retirement formula [check out the featured article Understanding Military Retirement Pay]. It is then multiplied by a reduction factor based on the number of months the retiree is short of 20 years (meaning the individual would receive less than 50% of their base pay). Active duty pay x Percent Multiple x Reduction Factor TERA Retired Pay So, letâs put forth the scenario that a service member is retiring at 15 years under TERA â" hereâs what they are going to be looking at: 15 (Years of Service) x 2.5 (the traditional retirement factor) x 0.95 (TERA penalty*) 35.625 percent retirement factor. Note that the 0.95 penalty applies to those who choose to retire at 15 years â" the closer the individual is to the 20-year mark, the lower the penalty â" in essence, the penalty table reduces retired pay by 1 percent for each year short of 20. As well, the service member gets credit for each full month of service - days of service less than a month are truncated; one day of service is zero months, and so is 29 days. So, this service member whoâs chosen to retire with 15 years of service will receive a little more than 35 percent of his / her basic pay over the lifetime of their retirement. It is about 14 percent less than those who get the 50 percent for serving the full 20 years. And just as with a 20-year retirement, TERA gross retired pay is also rounded down to the nearest dollar. An additional calculation/complication that some may have is if they retired under Career Status Bonus/REDUX (CSB/REDUX) - their gross retired pay may be further reduced by the REDUX multiplier. For a full explanation of the pay issue(s), refer to DoD 7000.14-R â" the Department of Defense Financial Management Regulation (DoD FMR)
